Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, on Sunday at Lagos House, Marina. The royal couple, visiting Nigeria to promote the Invictus Games, was also greeted by members of the State Executive Council.
This visit, highlighted in a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, emphasized the significance of the Invictus Games, an event founded by Prince Harry in 2014. The Games aim to support military personnel and veterans in overcoming physical and mental health challenges, fostering a sense of belonging and self-esteem.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their dedication to supporting military personnel, particularly in the area of mental health. He expressed his excitement about their initiatives and the collaborative efforts with Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and his wife, Mrs. Lilian Musa.
“We are honored to receive Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Lagos House, Marina. We are excited about the ideas and what they are planning to do, especially with the office of the Chief of Defence Staff,” said Sanwo-Olu. He highlighted the significance of their visit, noting that Prince Harry’s trip had been informative and enlightening, providing insights into Nigeria’s diversity and the crucial role Lagos plays in the nation’s cohesion.
The Governor noted the couple’s visits to Kano State and the Federal Capital Territory, adding, “I’m sure they have their own experience of what Nigeria looks like. We have extended an additional invitation to them to always come back when they want to.”
Sanwo-Olu also appreciated the couple’s focus on mental health issues, stressing the importance of addressing denial and stigmatization. He expressed hope that Nigeria might one day host the Invictus Games, showcasing the country’s competitive spirit.
